First Round Interview with Tony Finau
Q. Tony, nice start, 66 including the eagle on 14. If you can talk about your round today.
TONY FINAU: Yeah, thanks, JB. I think my first two holes were kind of a huge part of the round. I was able to save par on 10 and get up and down for par on 11, and then I was kind of on my way after that. I feel like I played really solid golf. Hit a lot of fairways, which you have to do out here. That was a bonus that I made an eagle there on 14. Overall, just a really solid round of golf.
Q. Can you describe the eagle?
TONY FINAU: Yeah, yeah. I hit a good drive up the right side, just caught the primary rough but had a good lie. Hit a nice 4‑iron up there about 30, 35 feet. Tricky little read, but everything over that hill kind of goes left and kind of put it out on the right side of the hole. It's one of those you're just trying to get it close and make an easy birdie and happened to just roll in for eagle. Like I said, it's a bonus.
Q. How have you felt about your season overall so far? Seems like some pretty strong results in recent weeks.
TONY FINAU: Yeah, I feel like I'm really close to putting together a string of good golf tournaments. I've had some good days during tournaments, whether that's in the first round, the final round, but I haven't been able to put together I feel like really strong finishes and four days of good golf. So I'm off to a good start this week. I'll just be looking to capitalize on three more days of good golf.
Q. Was there anything different about today that you felt like led to such a good number?
TONY FINAU: I can't say anything different. Just try to keep learning about where my game's at. Putter's been a good change for me over the last couple months. I threw a new putter in and I feel like that's helped on the short game side. Overall, just trying to learn and keep getting better.
