First Round Interview with Tommy Fleetwood

Q. Tommy, nice start, 5‑under par, if we can get some comments on your round.

TOMMY FLEETWOOD: Yeah, very happy. Feel like I did a lot of good things. I drove it much better on my second nine, so that was good. Felt like my irons were pretty solid all day. I putted really well today, which I was really happy with that. Did some great practice on the greens so to get a nice day, like a nice result out of that was good. Like a couple ‑‑ actually three really good putts at the end, 7, 8, 9 to like make that round feel very, very good. That could easily have been a 2 under. The way you finish on the greens makes it 5, so yeah, feels good.

Q. What would a good result this week mean to you going into Augusta?

TOMMY FLEETWOOD: I think, first of all, like a good result this week is a good result. There's always something going on, always something to play for and you've always got to focus on each tournament as it comes. That's why you're playing.

But of course you would rather be playing well and show like a lot of good stuff going into Augusta. You try and have the mindset that each week is a new week, but like as fickle as confidence can be, it's always nice to play well going into a big week.

Q. Tommy, what was the key to avoiding mistakes today, no bogeys on the round for you?

TOMMY FLEETWOOD: I didn't have tons to do. Actually got a really poor lie in a bunker on 14 and that was the closest I was to a bogey funnily enough. I hit two good shots, I was green side and ended up having to hole one from off the green for par so that was a big save.

The two saves on 7 and 9., like I putted very, very well, holed some nice ones and definitely towards the end, 7 and 9, felt like two great putts there. They were sort of six‑, seven‑footers with quite a bit of swing. Hit really nice putts. You're going to have to do that to save par at some point. When I had to, I made my up‑and‑downs or par saves, and yeah.

Q. You talked to us the other day about wanting to enjoy having expectations coming in as kind of the highest ranked player in the field. How did that play out in your mind today? Was that an impact at all?

TOMMY FLEETWOOD: No, I didn't ‑‑ it's not something I would necessarily think about. I just think like when people mention it, they talk about expectations, I always try to shift things into a positive light so I have a good appreciation for a good period of golf I've had that's put me in that situation.

Like I say, none of it has any impact on how you then play in a tournament. Yeah, like I wasn't thinking about it. I was just thinking about playing golf today, doing the best I could.

Q. How are you going to spend the afternoon?

TOMMY FLEETWOOD: I think I'm just going to chill out. The family's here. Like I'll have a bit of rest. I'll train with Colby at some point. I'll probably watch a bit of the golf. I always quite enjoy watching the golf when you get the chance if it's in the afternoon or the mornings or something. You just get like a nice reflection of how the golf course is playing rather than just you hitting the shots, so I'll do a bit of that, have dinner and hang out.

Q. What's the family's favorite thing to do at this resort?

TOMMY FLEETWOOD: Well, my two older boys just want to go play the golf course. Mo said to me last night, we finished dinner and he said, do you want to come walk about the course with me, he wanted to play. I was like no, I want to go chill. But they love doing that. Frankie will do anything. Probably wants to go on the lazy river. It's starting to warm up a little bit now, so maybe I'll take him.
