First Round Interview with Davis Thompson
Q. Davis, excellent round of golf. Seems even when you missed a green, it wasn't by much.
DAVIS THOMPSON: Yeah, I feel like (inaudible) right spot majority of the time. Yeah, that kind of helped keep the momentum going in the round. Was able to make some birdies on the back nine.
Q. Tell me about the decision on 18 whether to go for that green or not. You certainly had the distance to get there but just kind of take us through the mindset of (inaudible) better shot with a wedge?
DAVIS THOMPSON: Yeah, I felt like we were kind of in between clubs to begin with. It's a fast chip kind of coming down that hill if I were to hit it in the back bunker. I have a lot of confidence in my wedges so I felt like best play there was just to lay up and wedge it close. I did that, just wasn't able to make the putt.
Q. You're one of the few players I've seen (inaudible) it was the right play for you. I wanted to ask you, missing the cut last week, sometimes those are blessings in disguise. Did you have a chance to work on anything? I know you wanted to make the cut, but how did you use that time to prepare for this week?
DAVIS THOMPSON: Honestly, just got some rest. That was my fifth week in a row, this is my sixth, so body was a little tired to begin with. Just used it as an opportunity to just rest my body and get ready for this week. Went out there Saturday, worked on a few things and saw some of it pay off today, which was nice.
Q. Going low brings energy, don't it?
DAVIS THOMPSON: Yeah, definitely, for sure.
Q. Davis, excellent round, current co‑leader in the clubhouse, if we can just get some comments on your day.
DAVIS THOMPSON: Yeah, weird start with the weather delay, but was able to get some extra rest in getting ready for the round.
Got off to a nice start, hit two great shots on 1 and made the putt. That kind of set the tone for the day. When I did miss the green, I missed it in the right spot, was able to get it up and down and that helped keep momentum going. Was able to play really well on the back nine and come in with a 6 under.
Q. How did you feel about the state of your game coming into the week?
DAVIS THOMPSON: Honestly, feel like I'm doing a lot of really good things, just hadn't really seen the results yet. Just got to be patient with myself, patient with what I'm working on. Hopefully we can get things turned around and start putting some rounds together.
