Second Round Interview with Matt Wallace

Q. Matt, 7 under today, bogey free. Certainly taking advantage of the invite here at the Valero Texas Open. What are your takeaways from the day?

MATT WALLACE: Very happy. Whenever you go bogey free, whatever golf course it is, it's nice, but especially here. Wind's picking up now, greens are firming up. I drove it nice for the most part of the day and felt comfortable. I've been feeling comfortable about my game for a while now, just trying to hole a few more putts and keep the scoring going and making the right putts at the right time.

Q. On 17 you hit your approach to about a foot and eight inches. Could you describe that shot and setup you had for it?

MATT WALLACE: Well, it was playing -- I just missed a nice one on the hole before and I felt like that was when I was going to kick on and start to getting some momentum going for our back nine, the front nine, which is quite tough. But I left myself a nice yardage. I worked hard on my little pitches from about 60 yards and I had a nice 60-yard shot, about 58 yards, and I knew if it came up a touch shorter, because it was into wind, it would skip forward and be close. Supposedly it just hopped over the hole, so that was nice to go up there and just tap in.

Q. It's nice to see you stateside. What does your schedule look like moving forward between European Tour and the PGA TOUR?

MATT WALLACE: As I said over there in the other interview, it's difficult with Covid at the moment. A lot of the players on the PGA TOUR are playing a lot and it doesn't drop down to where it used to drop down with my category being just outside the Top-125. Obviously playing here off an invite, which I'm very grateful for, and a couple other invites I've had through top-50 in the world. Just slipped outside of that at the moment. So hopefully I can take care of that and then the schedule will clear up. Whenever I get a chance to play in Europe, I'll take that if it works on the schedule, but popping back and forth for me just doesn't seem right.

So we've got obviously the Masters next week. We've got a few majors still to come up as well. It's looking likely that I'll be over here for the foreseeable future for now.

Q. Speaking of majors coming up, Augusta next week, how are you feeling about the Masters?

MATT WALLACE: No, I'm not looking forward to it that much. Obviously -- well, yeah, it's one of my favorite -- it is probably my favorite places in the world.

Love the golf course now. I didn't like it my first year because I didn't know how to play it. Got taught how to play it by Bernhard Langer when I played with him and he showed me the way. He whipped my ass actually that week. Took a lot from him. No, I love it now. Last year was nice and looking forward to this year.
