SAN ANTONIO, TX —Today the Valero Texas Open announced that Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama has committed to play in the 2022 tournament, scheduled for next week at TPC San Antonio Oaks Course.

Matsuyama, currently ranked 12th in the world, finished tied for 30th here last year and a week later won his first major championship at the Masters Tournament.

Matsuyama joins Masters Champions Zach Johnson and Jordan Spieth in the field. The last time a defending Masters champion competed in the Valero Texas Open was 2008, when Johnson, Masters winner in 2007, came to San Antonio and won.

The 30-year-old has won eight times on the PGA TOUR. In 2016, he won three times, with two of those victories at World Golf Championships events.

There are twelve major championship winners in the field: Keegan Bradley, Jason Day, Bryson DeChambeau, Lucas Glover, Johnson, Matsuyama, Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy, Spieth, Henrik Stenson, Jimmy Walker, and Gary Woodland.

Currently, there are six players among the top 25 in the world who are scheduled to appear— McIlroy (8), Matsuyama (12), DeChambeau (13), Spieth (15), Abraham Ancer (19), and Tony Finau (23).

The 4:00 p.m. deadline has passed for players to commit to compete in the Valero Texas Open. They can withdraw from the field at any time.

Several legendary players and Hall of Fame members will be on-hand during tournament week to help commemorate the 100th anniversary. Deane Beman (1969 Texas Open Champion), Ben Crenshaw (1973 & 1986 Texas Open Champion), Hale Irwin (1977 Texas Open Champion), Lee Trevino (1980 Texas Open Champion) and Tom Watson (1987 Texas Open Champion) are all scheduled to appear.

Crenshaw, Trevino and Watson will be featured speakers at the tournament’s annual Night to Honor Our Heroes presented by Boeing military appreciation banquet on Friday, April 1. Sponsorships and guest tables are still available for those interested in supporting the event.

PGA TOUR players had until Friday, March 25 at 4:00 p.m. Central Time to commit and can withdraw from the 144-player field at any time.
