The devastating floods of July 4 hit close to home for many of us, not just in Texas, but well beyond. Over the past week many stories have been shared by those who were impacted and the community is rallying together to support and uplift during this incredibly challenging time.
San Antonio couple Emlyn and Penelope "Penny" Jeffrey, both 70, were spending the night at their cabin along the Guadalupe River along their 11-year-old granddaughter, Madelyn Jeffrey, who was known by family as "Emmy" and by friends as "Maddy." It is with a heavy heart that we share that all three did not survive the flooding. Emlyn volunteered at the Valero Texas Open for 15 years and was a nominee for this year's "Tom Mabe Volunteer of the Year Award".
Our thoughts continue to be with the victims and their families, as well as those whose homes and livelihoods suffered damage.
As the surrounding community begins to move forward, they will need our financial and caring support. Looking for ways to support those impacted by the recent Texas Hill Country floods? Here are several organizations actively involved in recovery efforts and are currently accepting donations to aid in restoring the area.
 | The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country - The Kerr County Flood Relief Fund was established to support relief and rebuilding efforts after the flood of July 4, 2025. Donations will be distributed to vetted organizations providing rescue, relief, and recovery efforts, as well as flood assistance. | |
 | Texas Search and Rescue - TEXSAR is responding to requests for support to the floods affecting Kerr County, and beyond, in Texas. We have deployed volunteer "ground pounders," swiftwater teams, boats, drone teams, K9s, etc. to agencies in need of us. | |
 | San Antonio Food Bank - In partnership with local emergency officials, the San Antonio Food Bank and our San Angelo Food Bank branch are responding with emergency food boxes and bottled water; hygiene kits and cleaning supplies; mobile food distributions in affected areas; and ongoing support as communities begin recovery. | |
 | American Red Cross Central & South Texas Region - The American Red Cross is working to support emergency shelters - providing food, relief supplies and other critical resources like financial and family travel assistance. | |
 | Salvation Army - Providing Emotional and Spiritual Care (ESC) Specialists to support survivors and grieving families; feeding units and support services are provided at multiple locations; and clean-up and hygiene kits are being distributed. | |

Back in the winner's circle! Congratulations to our 2022 Valero Texas Open Champion, J.J. Spaun, on his first Major victory. Nothing was sweeter than having his family by his side to celebrate Father's Day and winning the 125th US Open at Oakmont Country Club.
During the post-round interview with J.J. Spaun, he shared that, "It was a very touching moment to see my girls there. My oldest daughter was at the Valero [Texas Open] when I won, and she was about the same age as my youngest daughter now. It was so cool to just have my whole family there on Father's Day. It's just incredible. I have no words to describe the moment and them being able to see me as the winner."
"My daughter always asks me, every time dad goes golfing, she's like, 'Were you the winner today?' Sometimes I'm like, Yeah, I was. She's like, 'Where's my surprise?' So today she's like, 'You're the winner today.' Like she got to see it. She didn't have to ask me. So that was a really fun moment."
The buzz around Spaun's victory was heard throughout San Antonio and well beyond the great state of Texas. Here is just a few remarks we enjoyed seeing...
"The one thing that's so cool is the parallel to Ben Hogan," Oakmont's historian David Moore remarked. "They both won the Texas Open and they both won here. They both drove the 17th green on Sunday and two-putted [for birdie]. They both hit basically the same shots on 18: driver, 6 iron, make a birdie putt to close a U.S. Open. It's so crazy some of the parallels."
