Charity Spotlight
The Valero Texas Open is blessed to have over 200 charities participating in our fundraising program, Birdies for Charity, and doing fantastic work in our community. Starting this year, we want to feature two charities in each monthly e-newsletter so you can get to better know all of these wonderful charities and how they utilize the funds they raise through Birdies for Charity. Now is the perfect time to donate to a participating charity or school program – donate today to your favorite cause: www.ValeroTexasOpen.com/birdies

Children’s Rehabilitation Institute TeletonUSA (CRIT) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to serve children with neurological, muscular, and skeletal disabilities ages 0-18 regardless of their insurance, ability to pay or the time they need to achieve their goals. Our institution promotes human values and a culture that encourages the social inclusion of people with disabilities. Following our motto "Love and Science in the Service of Life," our goal is to become the world's leading pediatric rehabilitation system.

2018 was our first year participating in Birdies for Charity and it was hugely successful for us. What we raised through Birdies for Charity and the 7% match donation allowed us to keep providing rehabilitation services to 500+ patients and their families coming from all over the United States to receive treatment at our facilities in San Antonio, TX. This year our hope and goal is that we end up in the first place of the leaderboard, just like last year. Visit www.critusa.org to learn more.

The San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind & Vision Impaired has empowered the blind and vision impaired since 1933 through employment in their manufacturing plant as well as through programs/services from birth on upwards.

We’ve participated in Birdies for Charity annually since 2006 and have led the charity leaderboard for countless years. The funding derived from Birdies for Charity has allowed us to fulfill our mission and provide services for over 700 children and their families. With these funds we were able to purchase an indoor playground where little ones from ages 1 to 5 can learn to play safely and complete library with Braille and large print books. Funds also helped with our monthly support group for parents in San Antonio and surrounding areas. And provided classes in computers, assistive technology and adaptive aids, Braille training and mobility (cane) training at no expense to the families. Instilled in these children is the fact that vision is not a requirement to achieve their dreams! Visit www.salighthouse.org to learn more.

Was one of your New Year’s resolutions to volunteer this year or become more active in the community? Or you want to do something that helps raise funds and awareness to hundreds of worthy charities? Whatever the reason, we are looking for volunteering enthusiasts with a passion to help and together create a fantastic Valero Texas Open experience for PGA TOUR players, corporate sponsors and spectators alike.

The success of the VTO is due in large part to the volunteers who give generously of their time, talent and energy through 30 dynamic committees. During the week, you'll make new friends, get a behind-the-scenes look at a PGA TOUR event and witness many of the world's top golfers as they compete right here in your back yard! You'll also play an important role in the tournament's charitable mission to raise funds and awareness for hundreds of worthy causes throughout San Antonio and the South Texas region.

We are launching a new tradition for 2019 by featuring each month two volunteers so you can get to know the countless volunteers working behind the scenes because what they do is invaluable! To kick this off, the first couple of months we will be featuring our Tom Mabe of the Year award recipients.

Tom Mabe was a longtime volunteer who worked with players, fans, and officials for decades as a proud VTO volunteer. Tom was an American hero, retired from the US Army after being stationed in Germany and serving in Korea and Vietnam. Tom passed away during tournament week in 2014 and will be sorely missed, but remembered, at all future Valero Texas Open tournaments.

Tom always had a positive attitude and was truly a team player - willing and happy to take on any tasks or duties that were asked of him. He was passionate about the tournament and even more so of the charities that the VTO supports. Tom took pride in all that he did and was eager to pitch in any way he could.

The Volunteer of the Year Award has been named in his honor and all volunteers and TLC members have the opportunity to nominate a volunteer worthy of recognition who embodies the same character, spirit, and passion as Tom Mabe including his dedication, commitment, passion, charity, character, sacrifice & leadership.

Lisa Leong has worked as a part of the Hospitality committee for over seventeen years. Her inviting disposition comes with a smile and good spirit as she is willing to help anyone she encounters.
