Inaugural “Tom Mabe Volunteer of the Year Award” Recipient

SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Valero Texas Open recognized the profound contributions of Tom Mabe, a longtime volunteer who worked with players, fans, caddies and tournament officials for decades as a proud member of the Tournament Leadership Council (TLC). An American hero, retired from the US Army after being stationed in Germany and fighting in Korea and Vietnam, Tom sadly lost his battle with cancer during tournament week of 2014 and he has been sorely missed ever since.

To celebrate Tom’s memory and his vast contributions to the Valero Texas Open over the span of 30 years, the Tournament Staff, along with the TLC, established the “Tom Mabe Volunteer of the Year Award” in his honor.

During this year’s tournament week, all volunteers and TLC members had the opportunity to nominate a volunteer(s) worthy of special recognition and who embody the same character, passion, dedication and spirit as Tom Mabe. After much review and deliberation of the nominees, Greg Brueland was announced as the winner of the inaugural “Tom Mabe of the Volunteer Year Award’ at last month's Tournament Leadership Council Appreciation Banquet.

Mary Mabe, Tom’s wife was in attendance and assisted with the announcement and presentation of this year’s recipient. Greg Brueland embodies the essence and true spirit of volunteerism. Several nominations were submitted for Greg, who has worked on the 13th hole as part of the Gallery Control committee, for his “selflessness and mentorship to other volunteers.” Words used to describe Greg included passion, enthusiasm, and his invaluable help was contagious.

Greg humbly accepted the award and spoke with grace. As Volunteer of the Year, he was awarded with a Valero Texas Open gift package and a round of golf for a foursome at TPC San Antonio. A charitable donation of $1,000 will be made in Greg’s honor to a charity close to his heart, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

In addition, Greg will receive a smaller version of the Valero Texas Open tournament trophy; a symbol of appreciation for his significant impact on the Tournament. A perpetual trophy is also being created to proudly display the names of all Tom Mabe Volunteer of the Year Award recipients throughout the upcoming years. This perpetual trophy will be kept year-round in the Valero Texas Open offices as a reminder of the importance of Volunteers to the success of the tournament and will also be exhibited in the Volunteer Headquarters during each Valero Texas Open.
