Valero Texas Open Sponsors Valero Junior Texas Open

In Partnership with the American Junior Golf Association, Valero Texas Open Looks to Elevate Long-Standing Junior Golf Tournament

SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Valero Texas Open, together with the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), is excited to announce the Valero Junior Texas Open at TPC San Antonio this July 12-16.

In 1922, the historic Brackenridge Golf Course set the stage for the inaugural Texas Open. Now, nearly a century later the fabled site will play host to aspiring junior golfers for the Valero Junior Texas Open’s Qualifier to be held July 12. TPC San Antonio has hosted the Valero Texas Open since 2010 and will now also host a field of 96 of the top junior golfers from around Texas, across the nation and beyond for the Valero Junior Texas Open, July 14-16 on the AT&T Oaks Course.

The premier junior golf circuit in the world, the AJGA, through its tournaments, has developed many of the games current touring professionals, including: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Davis Love III, Jim Furyk, Rickie Fowler, Stacy Lewis and Paula Creamer. In fact, the Valero Texas Open’s reigning Champion, Jimmy Walker, won this San Antonio AJGA Tournament in 1996 at the age of 17.

As the Valero Texas Open looks to grow this tournament and position it among the best on the AJGA, they have partnered with the PGA of America to secure exemptions into the Junior PGA Championship for the Valero Junior Texas Open’s Boys and Girls Division champions. The Junior PGA Championship will be played later this summer, August 3-6, at Miramont Country Club in Bryan, Texas.

As part of this partnership with the PGA of America, the Boys Division champion of the Junior PGA Championship will earn an exemption into the Valero Texas Open next April. Therefore, any one of the junior boys participating could just be two wins away from competing on the PGA TOUR, along-side the best golfers in the world.

“We are thrilled to expand on our support of junior golf through the Valero Junior Texas Open,” explained Larson Segerdahl, Valero Texas Open Executive Director. “The AJGA has done an incredible job developing golf’s next generation and we’re excited to play a part in that. The level of talent that these young golfers have is astounding, and by sponsoring the Valero Junior Texas Open, we’ll provide them an opportunity to showcase their skills on a world-class stage at TPC San Antonio.”

On Monday, July 13, the Valero Junior Texas Open will host a Junior-Am providing local sponsors a chance to play a competitive round of golf with one of the future stars of the game while raising money for worthy causes. Junior-Am proceeds will benefit The First Tee of Greater San Antonio, the AJGA ACE Grant and Valero Texas Open supported charities. Over the past decade, AJGA Junior-Ams have raised more than $2 million for youth programs.
