Valero Texas Open Earns “Best Of” award at PGA TOUR Tournament Meetings

PGA TOUR event honored for “Best Special Event” in 2014

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The Valero Texas Open (San Antonio) was honored by the PGA TOUR at the TOUR’s Tournament Meetings on Thursday, November 20 in La Quinta, Calif.

The Valero Texas Open earned an award for “Best Special Event” during the 2014 tournament at TPC San Antonio (AT&T Oaks Course).

“On behalf of the PGA TOUR, I am delighted to congratulate the Valero Texas Open for the special recognition it has received,” said Andy Pazder, PGA TOUR executive vice-president and chief of operations. “The tournament staff should be extremely proud of its hard work and for being recognized as the best among its peers on the TOUR.”

In 2014, the Valero Texas Open hosted more than 1,000 individuals for “A Night to Honor Our Heroes presented by USAA”, dedicated to honor the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Hosted by NBC’s Dan Hicks, the function included a room full of historic military artifacts, a presentation of Colors by Joint Base San Antonio’s color guard and a unique performance by the Roosevelt High School ROTC Drill team. “A Night to Honor Our Heroes” also included an active military perspective by Lieutenant General Perry L. Wiggins from Army North, a moving testimonial by wounded warrior and retired Master Sergeant Todd Nelson and a panelist Q&A with TOUR-star Jimmy Walker, NBC Golf Analyst and four-time winner on TOUR Notah Begay III, and Bruce Bowen, three-time NBA Champion with the San Antonio Spurs. The success of the event allowed the Valero Texas Open to contribute $200,000 to 14 charitable organizations focused on military and military family support initiatives.

“It is an honor to receive this award on behalf of the many individuals who have made ‘A Night to Honor Our Heroes presented by USAA’ such a special part of the Valero Texas Open each year,” said Larson Segerdahl, Valero Texas Open executive director. “The United States Armed Forces has played a key role in the community of San Antonio and in the success of the Valero Texas Open. ‘A Night to Honor Our Heroes’ is a small way to pay tribute to those service men and women who have dedicated themselves to this country and its citizens. This award is for them.”

The 2015 Valero Texas Open, won this year by Steven Bowditch, will be held March 23-29 at TPC San Antonio (AT&T Oaks Course).
