Past Champion Highlights
StarOur champion Kevin Chappell is playing in his 200th career event on the PGA TOUR this week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. During his career, Chappell has made 132 cuts in his 199 starts prior to this week.
StarAs we check in our champion’s performance so far, this season, his best finish is a T6 at the CareerBuilder Challenge on the strength of a second-round 64. He is currently ranked 34th in the world and 65th on this week’s FedExCup standings. Last year, Kevin Chappell advanced to the FedExCup playoffs for his seventh consecutive year and to the finale for the second straight time.
StarOur 2011 champion Brendan Steele finished T3 Sunday at the Waste Management Championship, with scores of 68-67-67-67. He is currently ranked 35th in the world and 3rd in the FedExCup standings.
StarDid You Know? On his way to finishing second in the 1954 Texas Open at Brackenridge Park, Johnny Palmer shot 65-62-64—191 (22-under) for the lowest opening 54-hole score in TOUR history. Palmer, who lost to Chandler Harper by two strokes that year, would hold that record until 1996 when John Cook recorded a 189 at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. Currently, the record for opening 54 holes is shared by Steve Stricker and Justin Thomas at 188. Stricker did it at the 2010 John Deere Classic and Thomas at last year’s Sony Open in Hawaii.
